It is likely your Cockatiel will never talk. He might, don't get your hopes up.

My guy picked it up on his own.

Try to use a lot of passion in what you say to him. It'll make it more fun for him.

:greycockatiel: You don't want to keep repeating the word over and over again otherwise he might get sick of hearing the same old word over and over agin, just like humans! :greycockatiel:

My little tiel is about 16wks old now and all s/he seems to do is squeak the same 3 or 4 noises. I would like him/her to talk but if s/he doesnt then I dont really care cos s/he is so darn cute that I love him anyway. The only real reason that I would like a boy is because of the egg-binding issue with the females, that scares me. Lynne

Some birds talk, some don't... your best bet is to speak meaningfully and enthusiastically to the bird and in its presence. Greet him with the same phrase every time you enter the room, that kind of thing. I hear those tapes are fairly useless. IMO they tend to pick up sounds they interpret as communications... my GCC returns the "contact call" of the microwave, for example.

Yes, I greet him with hello every time I enter the room. How long do you think it will take him to pick it up?

It will take quite long for a cockatiel to pick up talking. They can pick up whistling a lot easier so try to start of with a bit of whistling. Be patient, and once your cockatiel has picked up whistling then it will find talking a little easier.

I'm not gonna teach him to whistle before talking, cos if I train him to whistle then it will be harder for him to learn to talk
