Baby Macaw Toni - Training / Taming / Socialise

Postby Yolandi » Sun Aug 06, 2017 1:18 am

Hi All,

I am new to the site, my name is Yolandi and I am in Dubai. I have a 5 month old Macaw that is tamed but still not use to use. We got him yesterday, 6 Aug 2017. I would like to give him training and good excersises, he can't fly as yet and they pulled out his tail feathers.

I want to make sure he is healthy as can be and gets all the care he deserves. He does not stay in a cage and is in the open house.

I wanted to know if there is any one that can help with more training with him? I also want him to socialise with other parrots. Is there "play groups" for them?

Thanks
Yolandi

Welcome, Yolandi! At five months of age, you have a VERY young baby in your hands and he won't be ready for training for, at least, another 6 to 8 months so forget about that for now and simply bond with your bird for now. I would not recommend you expose a baby to other birds, especially where you live [lots of poached birds over there!] and, actually, I would not recommend you expose your birds to any other bird unless you know for a fact that the other bird is completely free of disease because even if the bird doesn't look or act sick, it could be a carrier and infect yours [so, basically, you would need to see blood work results indicating the bird was tested for contagious diseases and found negative].

For now, you need to handfeed it for another four months and make sure he has two different kinds of soft food served fresh and warm twice a day as well as fresh fruit, veggies, leafy greens and one source of higher protein food -I recommend nuts for macaws. His tail feathers will grow back in time and you can then get a harness for him.
