Free flight in the house -Budgies..

Postby budgies-lovebirds » Mon Nov 09, 2009 12:57 pm

Hello,
I got my budgies about a year ago now and they are getting pretty tame. They all step up and let you stroke them. But whenever i let them out they flap around and i find it impossible to get them in!
I would like to be able to train my budgie to fly to my hand when i call him, is this easy and can you teach my how to do it?
Thanks answer soon as possible!

A) This belongs in flight training so I moved it to that section
B) You need to clicker condition and target train your budgies
C) Here are some resources on recall training:

Follow these steps to target train your parrot:

To begin to train the bird, talk to it a lot and put your hand near it on the perch when you greet it. After it becomes accustomed to your hand and seems to look forward to your visits, you can gently hold the bird. It is a natural reaction for birds to bite. As long as it isn't hurting you, could simply continue to hold the bird until it stops biting. Otherwise, a gentle tap on the chin will put it off from biting you.

You can hand train the bird after it is accustomed to your hand in the cage. Put your finger out and hold a treat just beyond your finger so that it must hop on to your finger to get the treat. Do this repeatedly until it comes to associate your hand with the food. You can continue the exercise outside the cage. The cage is a good place to start though because your bird will be more focussed.
