Flighted Parrot Hide and Seek - Recalls Around A Corner

Postby Michael » Thu Dec 17, 2009 10:39 pm

Just wanted to share a video I made with Kili flying around corners. I am strictly recalling her verbally here and not visually as I may have in other videos. She really understand both the verbal and visual recall cue really well.

That's awesome! How did you make the transition between in sight recall and out of sight recall?

Quite easily actually. I always used the verbal cue simultaneously with the hand cue so she knew both. Then I would stand in a place where she could see me but just barely and recall. Then I'd recall from around corner but she didn't come, then I'd pop around corner and call so she could see me. She'd start flying and then I'd hide back around the corner but she knew I was there and kept coming. I trained her elsewhere but the hallway to room made it clearer for a video what we did.

I had to start by recalling her straight out and then I'd work my way closer and closer to the corner so she knew to expect me there until I could stand around the corner. Once she realized that she has to come out and go around the corner, I could go back as far as I want. But to keep it "hide and seek" rather than always fly around corner, I mix it up. Sometimes I recall straight out and sometimes around corner to keep her thinking.

Just watched a few of your vids after this one. Gotta say, you two are pretty friggin awesome. It's inspiring actually. Can't wait to get more familiar with training and start really putting some effort into it.
