My bird doesn't fly outside!

Postby Jackson312 » Wed Oct 03, 2012 11:56 pm

Hi,

My :pied: doesn't fly to me outside. Inside she is fine but she seems really distracted outside. She has a harness on and that also seems to be distracting her. Any help would be great!
I love my :pied: Jackpot!

How long have you been taking her outside?

If it hasn't been long then give her longer, she feels safer with you, remember that even though 'tiels have been in captivity a long time they are still prey animals and hold that instinct to avoid danger as much as possible.

I have been taking her out for about a week. Yesterday was quite scary when there was a stray dog eyeing her and when i walked away it was actually following us! Luckily the guard was there to scare it away. I was holding her on my finger and making her flap her wings then she took off. Should i use this to my advantage?

How is it to your advantage to scare/force your bird off your hand?

I'm a first time owner so i was just wondering if i should but i guess that the answer is no. Thanks!

EDIT: She doesn't usually fly off my hand. I think you thought that i did it on purpose but she just flew off. Sorry, should have explained it better.

have you flown her in the house with the harness? i would try putting her on a stand inside and calling her to you with the harness on or putting a toy or treat on the stand to have her fly off you wearing the harness.then outside fly her in a quiet area close to home like on a porch close to home so she feels safe first.

Another thing when it comes to getting a steady recall outside you can actually build it up to be as likely as can be to happen once outside by doing it in variouse indoor locations, especially unfamiliar ones. seeing you wear a harness practising outside may not do much harm but it is always nice to set up for as much success as possible. And getting your tiels confident up by doing it at friends houses in a quiet backyard etc etc. the more reliable the recall in variouse calm unknown places the more reliable your recall will be in louder places with more movement etc.

Keep it positive. Make it so the bird wants to fly to you.
