We live in Arizona so there are ceiling fans in every room. We have a Sun Conure but he stays in our bedroom and if he is not securely in the cage we don't use it at all, we use a portable fan. Starbuck has a very large floor to ceiling tree with lots of toys on it and a very large cage. We ran one of those big wire ropes from the cage to the tree so he goes back and forth with free reign of the bedroom when I'm at work for a few hours in the afternoon and all the way into the evening until it gets dark. I just make sure the room is "birdproofed." The funny part is when I come home from work he's usually back inside his cage sleeping in his Happy Hut!

Thats the only problem that I have personally I like heat, my room is always like 70-80 in the summer, I hate Air Conditioning with a burning passion but I like fans every now and then. I'm scared if one of the fans is on and I let a bird out :s

I have a ceiling fan in every room in the house. Sometimes I turn them off it gets to cold but ALOT of the times they're on. Should I make a habit of turning them off before letting the Parakeet out?

I have ceiling fans in every room. Never has a bird flown into one until Myrtle. It caught the tip of her wing and scared her. She won't do that again.

There is a problem with ceiling fans though. If they are off when the cockatiels are out they are used as perches.

Yes.

In the summer, my room gets VERY hot. So I need my ceiling fan. But, I've made it a habit of turning it off, and waiting for it to stop rotating before letting everyone out.

The budgies think it's a toy. They'll perch on it, start flapping their wings, and it'll start spinning.

We had that problem with our Tiels, easy fix for us.

-Turn fan off
-Let Tiels out
-Keep broom handy
-Wait for Tiels to land on fan
-Give the fan (probably one of the blades that a Tiel isn't perched on) a VERY strong push, enough to give them a massive fright
-Watch Tiels crap their dacks
-Reward when Tiels perch on certain perches
-Repeat if needed

Tada

My tiels feel the wind from the fan and don't go near it. :amazon: Rambo the pedestrian never gets airborne. Myrtle caught the tip of her wing once and now flys lower when she flys.

I also never had a problem with fly paper until Myrtle. She landed too close and it stuck to her belly. She called "Moma help". She lost some belly feathers and now considers it the evil monster at the light. When I change it she gives it a look like, your not going to get me.
