Sky flew into the kitchen for the first time

Postby FionaNavas » Wed Aug 17, 2011 11:44 am

We have Sky's cage in the living room between the sofa and the TV. Now our living room is large enough for Sky to fly around unhinderd by any obsticals and we dont have any closed doors so she is free to fly to any room she wants to and even upstairs.

Now we haven't had Sky for very long (6 months) and she's never flown out the front room door before today.

She flew into the kitchen and landed ontop of the cabinets. She had a wonder around for a few mins and then flew around the kitchen a few times then landed on the backdoor spagetti curtain. At first I thought she was stuck but she then proceeded to climb up and hang on the top of the door for a few min while having a good look around.

I managed to convince her to perch on my arm and I brought her back into the living room.

Hopefully this means she's becoming more comfortable in her suroundings to further explore her home.

I have a really open floor-plan, too. The living room & kitchen are only separated by a partial wall & a bar, so my tiel has easy access to the kitchen. Thankfully, he's good about steering clear of the stove/oven. I wonder why though? Is it too hot when there are things cooking, so he doesn't like it? I have disciplined him to stay away from the stove/oven at all times, he's never allowed to be around it, but I don't think I'm such a good trainer that his behavior can be completely due to me. I choose to believe that it's more a matter of him being amazingly smart! ;)

Wonderful to know the bird is learning to get around. This is a good time to ensure that your kitchen is parrot safe. Here are some things to keep in mind:

-Never do any cooking (except maybe oven and only if its not self cleaning) when bird is out
-Do not leave any food out (or it will get pillaged and reinforce going there)
-Do not leave a flooded sink (bird could drown)
-Never feed bird at/from the table or it will never leave you alone
-Disable and do not use ceiling fans
-Ensure windows/doors remain closed
-Don't leave anything out of any value

Hope that helps, have fun, and be safe.

Don't forget about closin' the toilet seats (since most men seem to leave 'em in the UP position) :-)

You have to baby proof your house for the flying baby.

When I am cooking or other work in the kitchen I never leave the room. If I have to I turn off the stove and put lids on whatever. Always know where your bird is before you close the refridgerator.

The Christmas tree did not survive with it's decorations.

Its wonderful! I think that your bird is starting to settle in and not as scared of its surroundings so it will start to do some exploring!
