Need help on trick

Postby Kaja » Sun Aug 11, 2013 9:55 am

Hi

I am new in this forum and sorry for my english i am from Denmark.

i have a budgerigar named Cesar.
He is 1 year old and very tame.
I am home all day with him and his cage is allways open so he has access to my appartment all day. When we go to sleep i close his cage.

I try to make some tricks with him.
I use a clicker (Been doing clicker traning on my cat (died 2 years ago) with lot of success)
He is very good at target traning we moved on from target a stick to target fingers and other objects.
But he will not go to far for the stick if i move it to far away so we are working on that.
So far he can 'wave' and 'turn' ('turn' he seem to forget quickly so i try to train that alot with him)

On this video you can see me train 'put an item in the bucket' but it is not going very well.
He does not seem to get the idea. When i place the bucket to the left or right he just toss the item around and something he is lucky and it ends in the bucket.
Any idea what i can do to make him understand?

Also Cesar is afraid of EVERYTHING NEW.
I figured out if i pretend to eat/tast the object and useing my target command 'touch' he is more likely to wanna see what i am holding but it is a battle of will every time.
Any idea what i can do to make him wanna explore new things?

Cesar is also afraid of standing on tables which makes it hard to make new tricks.
I try to offer him millet while he is on the table but he just eats it quickly and flies away.
Any ideas what i can do?

sorry for the long text i hope you can understand me :)

Hi

Thank you for the replies :-)
I will keep traning him as much as i can.
On Saturday cesar is getting a friend!
Another male, just started to eat by it self.
No idea if we can keep training when the new one is here but i will try anyway maybe if i am lucky the new one will copy what cesar is doing 'hehe'.

Are you doing a training diet or does he have access to food at all times? It is my understanding that they are more willing to do tricks if they are on the training diet.

Hi

He has access to food all the time.
But i take it away one hour before i start training.

Got a friend for him now.
Training is not going very well.
He cant seem to concentrade because the other one is calling him.
I dont have another room i can close behind me.

Also trying to tame the new one.
He is only 50 days old.
That is not going very well either, because he dont want to leave the other bird hmmm

I am upset but will keep trying

Can you train in a big closet, or kitchen or something? (be sure to bird proof it first)

Hi

I dont have a big closet.

Kitchen and livingroom is one room.
This where my birds has free access all day and fly around alot :-)

Bathroom has a very big mirror. I cant cover the mirror.
Ceasar found out there was a bird living in the bathroom :-D and he called it and flu into the bathroom so he could "talk" to the bird in the mirror 'hihi'.
But after the new bird came he as not been interested in the bathroom mirror 'hehe'

I would not be happy about useing my bedroom.
It is very very small and has leaning walls and the seeds shells would not be easy to collect.

I rent the appartment so not much i am aloud to change.

If i keep failing on my training and taming i guess i will have to pick either the bathroom or the bedroom but im not happy about that.

Just keep on doing the same thing with him! I quit clicker training with my bird and just used treats and nothing else. There have been times when he hasn't done the trick, but you just need to have patience and keep on practicing with him. It is so fun to watch them do their tricks once they have it down! :swaying:

GOOD LUCK!
