Flipping/Climbing Around A Perch

Postby Kathleen » Wed Oct 28, 2009 4:57 pm

I had tried teaching this at one point, and it was unsuccessful. It's when the bird hangs upside down on a perch and then climbs back up, sort of like a flip around a perch. It seems easy to train, just requires targeting... but what could I have been doing wrong? Does this trick require a special kind of perch? Should it be a thick perch?

It basically looks like this:

That is cute! I would guess it should be a small perch that's fairly smooth but where the budgie can still keep a grip.
I don't know how you'd teach it though. I've seen where a cockatoo is perched on a rope and two people hold the rope and spin the cockatoo.
It looked kind of fun!

Mojo does that all the time! It's not a trick that's on cue, he just thinks it's great fun!

He used to do it like the bird in the video, he would just flip down then grab the perch with his beak and go back up. Now he 'flies' around the perch, he flips down and flaps his wings and 'flies' until he's upright. It's really cute and he really looks like he enjoys it :D

my green cheek learned that trick on accident. I held a treat below her when she was on my finger and she turned upside down to take it from me. When I didn't give it to her she went the rest of the way around my finger until she was back on top. I decided, "hey, thats a cool 'trick'" and rewarded her with the treat. after luring her around my finger once or twice more she caught on. Now she doesn't hesitate to flip around my finger when I tell her to, but won't do it on a perch unless she knows that she can keep a secure grip. braided rope perches that are the right diameter work well for her =) hope this helps?
