Uh Oh

Postby Becco Lunatico » Thu Nov 04, 2010 6:08 am

My 2 year old Nanday has been amazingly responsive to his first trick training for about 6 weeks and quickly learned 5 prop gigs and 4 physical commands. All of a sudden last week he decided that he wanted to fly to the top of his cage instead of working. My bad, I "chased/retrieved" him with his perch stick one too may times (which translates to oh, maybe 3 times with this wise guy). I have tried moving his training area but he has been stubbornly refusing to focus and flies on my shoulder and wages all out war with the perch stick.

Any suggestions?

1) Don't Clip
2) Flight Training
3) Training Motivation

The parrot needs to want to do the training (and get the rewards of training) more than to go back to the cage. The right answer to the dilemma is not prohibiting return, but rather finding ways to make training more rewarding. And finally just take it easy and realize that some days they just don't want to cooperate.

OK OK I get it. Consistency with targeting. Why did I think I could drop it when he "had" it? Yes yes yes, he has to be motivated. Back to target training to get him used to uping on the pick up stick...er....what would be a better term for that little important item that Jimmy prefers over my finger??? hmmmm.....

Still, I have dropped the props for now. He is nervous in general. I have rushed him unknowingly. Freedom and mutual respect. Yes these creatures are NOT domesticated. I stand in amazement that they even chose to interact with us the way they do.

Yesterday, a lot of flashing that I couldn't connect with anything but his upcoming sexual maturity?.....we continue with towel play, me sitting with a towel draped across my lap folded into a cubby hole, him hurried to get into it, cooing, preening my cuticles....then we played with the scarf, the I'm-going-to-eat-you-game... will this encourage aggression? I don't know, but he enjoys it...

I have been treating him for shake, wave, turn around, "eagle" (wings up). This week I started click/treating whenever he put one foot under one wing and stretttcccched it out, cuing with "pretty wing!" Today he is doing it on command. Last night he flew to me from across the room. I used the command "come" and a gesture of placing my hand on my chest...is that adequate/ economical?

Thank you so much for being here. Who else would understand or care as much as other bird enthusiasts?
