Roll-over trick

Postby iknowwhatiknow » Fri Jan 21, 2011 11:14 pm

Has anyone got any hints for this one? I've got Rory to the point where he'll easily roll with the touch of my hand on his wing, however, every time he does, he gets both feet around my hand/finger/whatever to propel himself the rest of the way. Obviously - the simplest answer would be to keep my hand out of the way, but he's tiny and I'm not very quick.

Ideas?

Basically just keep doing it and wait for a session when he is super motivated. Sometimes the weather or other factors can increase appetite or mood for whatever reward you give so you may not always know it's coming. Keep practicing and when you hit one of those periods of super motivation, he may perform the behavior before you force it in anticipation of the reward. This is the same for all tricks. There just comes a moment when the parrot "gets it" and if you are tardy with forcing it, their impatience leads them to do the behavior themselves.

Thanks Michael. We'll keep at it. Maybe I'll pull out some sultanas (raisins) as treats too.

I found this video on youtube really good for the roll over trick. even though my bird hates to be on flat surfaces to do tricks and its going to be a loooooooooong loooooooooooooooooooooong time until I can even try to teach him this trick.

Thanks for the video. That's pretty much what I've been doing, it's encouraging to see his bird improve gradually though, because that's what's happening in my training. We've done about 10 sessions, and maybe 1 in 15 roll overs happen without him grabbing on to me. Copious rewards when they happen, hopefully with consistent effort he'll rely on me less and less.

Thanks guys.

So - Michael (as usual) was right - try, try and try again. Two solid weeks of work on this one (3 or 4 sessions a day) and we've gotten it to this point. I'm super pleased!
