Playing Dead (first attempt)

Postby Julianajara » Fri Mar 30, 2012 7:35 am

So, by watching Michael videos and reading some sites, I decided to teach play dead to my Ringneck. So I will start teaching roll over and when she is good at it I will use it to play dead..is that right?
It will be tricky because she doesnt like to be touched on some parts of her boddy, so I cant roll over her haha I have to make her do it by herself and reward. I used a paper and a little fabric, so she could hold and roll. But she is having some difficulties on understanding what she is doing right, because she gets to distracted with the paper haha. And she is not rolling intirely..
So I would like to show the video I did today, because I need to know If Im doing it right. Help me ^^

This is how I taught my lorikeet to play dead (but since he is on his back playing all the time it wasn't that hard :P)

I started clicking/rewarding when he started to lay on his side, he then got it and started rolling on his back automatically.

You seem to be on the right track in the video, does she let you use toys to try and get her to roll over?
If she has a favorite toy try dangling it above her and hopefully she will lean sideways to play with it with her foot. Not sure if this will work with her though, depends if she plays on her back with toys. :)

Hi guys again.
Today was THE BEST!!! She actually rolled over, I mean, she layed on one side and got up by the other side, all of this while holdinh the piece of fabric she likes to play hehe
It was really cool she did it like 5 times, and I rewarded all of them.
The problem is, she still dont know exacly what she is doing right, because, when she gets on her back it takes like 5 to 10 seconds for her to get up again, so I dont know when to use the clicker...

Please can u help me??? (I have no video of today sorry :/)
when do I use the clicker? :irn:

PS: she cant stand me touching her while she is playing with the fabric, so I cant help her to roll with my hand.

Yeah. Well this past 3 days she start biting all over me have no idea why, so I will stop the roll over training for this week and get her some taming sessions, so when I do roll over again maybe 4 or 5 days fom here I will film it :)

Awesome, I look forward to seeing your/her progress, but good call to give her a break and do something else for a while.
It gives me hope that Sparky may someday do more tricks than playing 'soccer', I haven't seen much 'agility' stuff from IRNs so far!

yeah
as Hemp is on THAT phase, hehe i mean, rebel as all ring necks get when changing feathers and stuff, Im havin some problems with our training progress. So sometimes she gets really really scared and agressive so I have to go back all the way with the targeting ans steping up, but this week for instance she is all cute with me again, giving me kisses and asking for scratches haha.
I hope when this phase goes away she learns more tricks.

(she giving me kisses hehe)

You should click when she rolls even if she doesnt get up, after all, the point of playing dead is staying on your back right... :D
