What do your parrots know?

Postby marie83 » Thu Apr 12, 2012 6:31 am

What have you taught your parrot and how hard was it to teach? Doesn't matter if its tricks or taming or talking, what do they know?

Harlies still very much work in progress so I'm not going to go there just yet.

On a scale of 1(easy)-5 (hard) Ollie knows:
Step up (1)
Target-close range (1)
Target- from a distance, flight or walk (1)
Perch -step up onto it close range (1)
Go to perch -distance, flight(2/3)
Lie on back (1 in hand, 3 on a different surface)
Allow handling of wings (2)
Wear harness- ongoing mission (5)

Theres something else and I cant think what it is, theres no hope when I start moving on to other tricks :?

Mango has learned quite a bit, and I think that her trick training actually helped her taming considerably. :)

She knows:

1. Step up
1. Target (close range)
2. Target (short flight and far walking.)
1. Nod/Dance
2. Wave
2. Color Selection (picks color red.)
1. Lie on back
2. Toe-nail trimming
3. Wing-handeling (i can touch them and feel under them, but she won't let me extend them all the way...yet!)
2. Spin
1. Bat
3. Kiss w/ sound
2. Blow-dry manners
1. Fetch
2. Coin trick
3. Says her name
3. Potty Trained
3. Says "yeah"
1. Perch

:jenday:

All these took her a day to learn, except for the 3. and up ones. :)

Luna knows a pretty good number of tricks and things. For the most part, using Michael's methods, she will nail a trick in the first session and repeat it. There are a few exceptions though:
  • Step up: 2 (When she came to me, she didn't know this at all. It took some time because (a) some of her nails had been trimmed too short and her feet were sensitive and (b) she was just so used to being picked up from above.)
  • Potty training: 1
  • Target: 1
  • Laying back: 3 (She's weird about this one, but she'll do it.)
  • Wing handling: 4 (She really disliked this, so it took a really gradual approach.)
  • Flapping wings: 1
  • Spreading wings: 3 (Still learning this one. She'll do it now if I just barely touch her wings, but still won't do it just from seeing the hand gesture and hearing the verbal cue.)
  • Turning around in a circle: 2
  • Shake: 2.5
Toweling I'm still working on. She's not afraid of towels, she'll play with towels, and will stand on top of them, but she really dislikes being cuddled with one or if I pet her with one.

Mine know how to plan mischief.
They know to be quiet when they are doing something they are not aloud to do.
If they can't wake me up by pulling my hair they know how to get under the blanket and just wait.
They know how to destroy almost anything.
They know how to forage - in the kitchen. Myrtle got into the onions then breathed on me.
They know how to share. Rambo calls Myrtle if he gets something good. When Myrtle tore open the bread bag she brought Rambo a piece.
They know how to teach each other. Rambo taught Myrtle how to scare the sh.t out of the dogs.
They know how to cooperate. If one is trying to do something and can't pull it off, the other helps.
They know how to "talk back".
They know how to be cute and cuddly when they want what I am eating.
And on and on and on.

I have never trained them. We have been to busy with them training me.
