Postby KittGCC » Thu Jun 07, 2012 3:16 pm

I woul like to know from people who have had cockatiels/parakeets, what kind of tricks there feathered friends have learned and in what order did you teach these tricks?

Go into www.youtube.com and key in cockatiel. Not only will you learn but your little tiel will hear other tiels.

My Myrtle likes to watch Amazons but is really interested when she sees a BF. My tiels sing with the videos.

The little guys can do a lot of the things bigger guys can do!

In the order they were taught, Wiki (budgie) so far does:
* Target
* Step up
* Ball Fetch
* Basketball
* "Coin" retrieve - which will become piggy bank when I can find one budgie-sized :-)
* Turn around
* Wave
* Hop over (start of flight recall ready for when he can fly again)
* Bat
* Slinky Run
* Climb up (not quite a rope climb, but he can put himself back into his cage, since he can't fly)
* Birdie bowling

Now that he can fly:
* Flight recall
* Targeted flight (to perch, to cage, to me)
* Flighted basketball (carry ball to basket)

We're also working with the zoo max psitta puzzles - the small size is budgie sized, but the bird bank is perhaps a little tall for him, so he needs a platform to make it easier to locate into a slot.

* Coin into slot
* Colour sorting onto pegs - 1 colour

Finally we've made progress and I can add:
* Wings

It's unusual, but I taught target first, because he was "grabbable" - hand tame, but refused to step up. I used target to get him voluntarily out of his cage.

My Cockatiel can high five :D He learnt this by accident really, I was meant to teach him to wave but he didn't want to let go of my hand, so instead of waving he would give me a comical high five :D :greycockatiel:

Oh my! Wiki is one smart budgie :D :budgie: how long did it take to teach Wiki that? Wiki is now an inspiration to my sister whom also owns a budgie :D My sister is spending more time with her budgie (Hedwig) and both owner and budgie are happy :D Say hi to Wiki for me :D

Wiki's been with us since February 2012, and he's great at understanding what I am asking him to do. To give you an idea, just last week it took him 2 introductions to stop being afraid of his birdie bowling alley, and then one session to do his first bowl! Behaviour takes longer than props, because he is naturally very inquisitive and likes to copy what I do with things.
Say hi to Wiki for me :D

He says hello ;-)
