World Record - 20 Parrot Tricks in 2 Minutes!

Postby Michael » Fri Jan 15, 2010 11:21 am

I believe we've set a world record for the most parrot tricks in the shortest period of time.

Not that these records are officially kept... so if you know anyone who has done more or faster, let me know. However, I have come across very few parrots that know this many tricks and even fewer that can crank them out this quickly. Most parrots used in shows specialize in just a few specific tricks because they use multiple parrots (one for each trick).

I would have liked to do all of these as flights tricks but it would have just taken too much time. I was forced not to use Kili's puzzle trick either because it takes way too long and would have looked bad to just do one out of four pieces alone. I also did not include flight based behaviors as tricks. So overall Kili knows between 20 and 30 behaviors depending on how you count them. Many tricks are derivatives of other tricks, use alternative props, or are built on each other. So keeping count is becoming very difficult. Practicing all of the tricks regularly even more so.

Here's the list of the 20 tricks we performed with Kili in the video:

1. Wave
2. Nod
3. Turn Around
4. Target
5. Wings
6. Shake
7. Hello
8. Climb Rope
9. Coin Drawer
10. Piggy Bank
11. Flip Card
12. Bowl
13. Play Dead
14. Slinky
15. Fetch
16. Somersault
17. Basketball
18. Bat
19. Slide
20. Ring on Peg

This video was so difficult to film uncut because there was so much that could go wrong. One of my favorites of Kili's video collection! :D

Very interesting! Was Kili taught to place the pink ring on the pink peg and the blue ring on the blue peg? Or was this something she perceived on her own?

I know the famous African Grey Alex was taught colors, shapes, and what something was made of. It still always amazes me to see this in action!

Kili's somersault was precious. I've never seen that done before.

I probably will with my next parrot. It's just that Kili already knows the tricks and it is almost impossible to get her to show the initial steps now. I was still learning the process on her but now that I know what to do, I should be able to video the original training sessions on my next parrot.
