"Potty" training a Senegal

Postby Strawfrawg » Tue Mar 05, 2013 10:14 am

I plan to try to "potty train" my new Senegal baby. I have read a few different methods and am curious to hear what has worked for others. For some reason my tiel was fond of pooping on fabric so I used a bright orange hand towel (nothing else in the house was that color) as an approved place for him to go. He liked it so much it happened almost naturally, but I know it's unlikely to be that easy with another bird. I've read Michael's method...has this or any other approach worked for anyone here? How hard was it to train this behavior?

I had a similar experience with my bird doing the same thing almost naturally.

I think I used Micheals method. Just timed the poops and put him on his perch when that time came. Once he did his business, would praise/remove and repeat next 15-20 minutes. Over time Oscar my :senegal: would stop and hop up on my hand when he has to go. I still cant bridge the gap of me having to physically walk him over to his perch to go verses him flying over by himself. But I havent made it a priority in training either. I might start focusing on this more to see how it goes.

I'm with Wayne. Periodically I take Tiki back to her cage and tell her to "go poo-poo" and she goes and gets VERBAL praise. Of course there's still accidents as birds have a fast metabolism and this is expected. Don't give treats or use a clicker when potty training.

Good luck!
