How to keep my lovebird from chewing out my keyboard?

Postby hlasdf » Sun Apr 07, 2013 11:04 pm

I've read that I just shouldn't have her out when I'm using it, but I'm practically ALWAYS using it, and whenever I do, Daisy feels the strong need to get on it, bite any part of me that's touching it, and then chew out any key she can. I've tried targeting her away from it, which works for the meantime, but then she immediately runs back to the keys. If I put her on my lap instead, she tries desperately to climb onto the table. Toys don't work very well seeing as how she rarely plays with them. I would get one of those keyboard covers, but I'm using a laptop so that's not possible. Any solutions? What have you done to prevent or at least temporarily stop/lessen this behaviour?

Of course toys work. Just the bird wants to play with the same toys as you!

My sennie hops on my keyboard as I type, too. It's the same when I put makeup on, Tiki has grabbed mascara and lipstick tubes from my fingers more than once, lol. I either put her in her cage or give her something distracting to play with while she's on me... a shiny toy on my lap, heck, even q-tips work with my sennie. If you didn't mind you could also tie toys to a headband, and wear it

Ha! I suppose that's true - that would explain all my chewed up pencils!

Haha it could become the new fashion trend :).
Unfortunately, only some toys occasionally work in my lap. The other times, she's just trying to climb up onto the desk to get to the laptop!

Maybe you could purchase or make a play gym and play with her for a while when shes on it, seem interested in the toys hanging on it so she will play with them too. That way when you're typing she can just play on the play gym! Theres tons of websites on DIY play gyms!

Good luck!

Thing is I've already tried that :) In fact, we tried it and after months of her simply walking off of it uninterestedly even with treats hidden, we sold it today. What a coincidence that you brought it up!

Careful with the pencils they have lead and other paints on that coud be toxic.

You can try persistently correcting so if your bird jumps on keyboard ut him back to the playgym and just do it every single time. Sooner or later it 'should' sink in.

I've tried getting her to step up from places she wants to be in, but when she likes where she is, she gets aggressive and bites HARD. I used to have a playgym, but when I put her there or anywhere else for that matter, she'd jump off first thing and either head for the laptop or forage around the carpet. Leaving the room seemed to work for a short while, but now she's gotten used to it and doesn't care whether I'm with her or not as long as she has something interesting to do(the keyboard!).

Now I have the same problem with my :galah: :o I turn my back on him for 10 seconds and when I look, half the keys on my laptop are missing, let me know if you manage stop her from destroying the keyboard. :)
