Ship my bird to join my new flock?

Postby LiaraTivona » Mon Apr 08, 2013 11:14 pm

I had a budgie I was very bonded with in Virginia that I left with a friend while we moved across the country. My research seemed to indicate that the best option, since we drove our truck for 15 days to Oregon, was to have him shipped in an Iris Small Pet Carrier via Petsafe for about $70.

When we first got here, we had literally no money, even to feed ourselves. We were work exchanging for scraps from a farm. Come winter we were doing perfectly well but I thought it would be too cold to have him shipped. By that point it sounded like he was doing very well, sitting on their shoulder all the time, talking to birds outside the windows, flying in designated rooms of the house, so I thought I'd be safe waiting for spring. I rescued a companion for him who has been doing very well bonding and all, which was my intention. Last time I introduce a non-bonded bird to a bonded bird the non-bonded bird just cared about the bonded bird and the bonded bird just cared about me and not the other bird.

Spring has come. Should I have my friend ship my budgie to Oregon? It is a 6 hour flight, I believe, non-stop. Should I wait until we can afford to fly back there and take him back in the cabin? Also, I am concerned that we will do all this to bring him here, and he might not get along with our current bird. Then what?

And of course there's always the possibility that they will love each other so much they won't care for me! Makes me think I should have three, so while two are chatting I can be with the third. Maybe that's what everyone thinks, though, and soon they have 10!

Also, a general question... budgies bond pretty deeply. He was bonded with me first, then with my friend. Does that mean he would prefer to be with me or with my friend?

He is just down the road from the Central Virginia Parrot Sanctuary. Before he bonded to us I was thinking he should live there since they have this awesome huge aviary and take such good care of the birds. He would have lots of bird friends like he wanted. But once he bonded with us I abandoned the idea that he was the type to thrive on only bird socialization.

Let me know any thoughts you have! :budgie:

Maybe you should wait until you can fly back and bring your current bird along, that way you can see if they will become friends and if your budgie still wants to come back with you.

If you decide to do that, when it comes to introducing the birds put them both in a place both of them has never ever seen that way none of them will be territorial.

All the best
