Travelling by car- advice

Postby Eric&Rebecca » Thu Apr 11, 2013 6:16 am

So as per my other post we are having to move both our cockatiels out of the house due to emergency repair work in the bathroom which will involve strong fumes.

We will be travelling by car for abour 2.5 hours. What precautions should I be taking with the birds in transit?

I know that I should:

Cover them to prevent stress
Make sure the cages is secured in case of bumps
Ensure water is given and food prior to the journey
Ensure the temperature in the car is not too hot or cold
Stop half way to check on birds and check constantly throughout the journey.

I'm indrecibly worried about George our new cockatiel as he only been with us a week! H'es only young and I am worried about the stress but obviously he can't stay with us and risk the fumes. Is there anything I can do in particular to reduce stress. I have tamed him down.

Eddie has travelled many times so I'm not worried so much about him but as always I don't like it when I'm not there everyday

Actually, if you are alone in the car, its probably better for your birds if you keep your attention focused on the road ;).

Otherwise, I think you've got most of it covered!

Oh I'm not driving! LOL. I will be with the birds in the back of the car, which is a massive one. We can open the back inside and flattened it so we can secure the cages and I can still see them next to me.

My mum will be driving the car. LOL

I am just worried about the stress on George being taken from the breeder to ours and then to someone else less than a week later... I know its not optional and there was no way of forseeing this situation.

Is there anything i can do to minimize the stress on him? Or help him?

Actually, I do have one piece of driving advice for your mother, if she's not driven with birds in the vehicle before (if she has, just ignore this).

Brake early before stop lights, a lot earlier than you otherwise would, and break very slowly. The same goes for acceleration, slooooow acceleration. This makes it alot easier for the birds to keep their balance, and not get agitated or frightened by the car ride.

I dont think there is anything else you can do to minimize his stress from leaving home, other than visit him at your mothers, and doing what you already are. Its gonna work out fine, dont worry :)! I had Stitch living with my mother when we moved to our new appartment about one and a half years. Granted, we'd had him longer than you had George (about 4-5 months), but still. There wasnt any problems at all, infact he liked my mother!
