Going on vacation

Postby xxarmando » Thu May 16, 2013 12:26 pm

Hello My name is Annette my husband and I have had our baby Luna for about a year and a half almost. Luna is our baby see's us everyday. She is in her cage about 9- 5.30 Tuesday - Friday and then on sat- Mon she is in her cage from 10- 2.00 and then she is out in our bedroom and around the house flying and hanging out with us. I am very worried because my husband and I would like to go on vacation for a few days about 4 days and we will be leaving luna at home. We live with my mother in law and brother in law who also owns two cockatiels and so she will have cage company with them because they are always together. She is going to be in her normal room yet she wont be out at all in those few days because we will be on vacation and she is aggressive with anyone who is not my husband and I. Her cage is currently 20 X 36 I was thinking of buying her a flight cage before I go so that she has a lot of room to fly and be free. I am very scared of her leaving and plucking or becoming lonely because she is very bonded with my husband and I. I am not sure what I should do anyone with advice on this situation or personal experience would be super helpful thank you so much

4 days nonstop in the cage? It's no big deal. BUT, get the parrot used to it in advance and see how it does. Try a day when you're home not letting it out at all. Try going away for a weekend. Give the bird chances to practice in smaller doses and see how it does before going all the way. 4 days is ok as long as someone is taking care of it.

Thanks Michael :) She has spent close to an entire day in the cage and she has been fine. I have never on a trip though will try a weekend trip to see how it goes. Usually she sleeps in our bedroom with us I know when we are gone she will have her food change and be covered at night by my mother in law but do you think i should get her used to sleeping in the same room as the cocktiels as well. Only thing I am scared of is if she starts plucking or gets depressed while we are gone. Thanks for the advice :)

How soon are you leaving?

I think if you can you need to introduce change to routines slowly as parrots are creatures of habit, particuarly if they are not used to change. In your case you may not have time to introduce change slowly now so just do what you can, you know your birds confidence and adaptability better than we do, just think things through and monitor your bird for signs of stress carefully.
