Moving....

Postby thandie » Tue Jun 11, 2013 3:20 am

OK, so we are moving end of June to a new house. Not far, in the same city just a different house. So I was just wondering whether anyone has got some advice for me regarding this. As I know moving birds to a new environment always are stressful to them.

I am planning on moving her in her regular cage. Just putting her as is in the car and drive her to the new house. Would this be OK, or should I rather not do this?

I also heard that it is best taking them last so that they don't spend so much time alone in the new environment.. Is this really better? Since I believe there is going to be even more commotion in the old house than in the new one. (We are moving over a period of two days) And the old house needs to be cleaned.. Carpets etc.

Also arriving at the new house, should I leave her alone as I had to when first bringing her home as to give her time to get used to her new environment, or can I continue regular interaction?

Thank you!

When we moved to our new appartment 18months ago, we let Stitch live with my mother for a few days. That way we could do all the packing, and getting the new place ready without stressing him out, and be sure to air everything out properly etc.

Is there any chance you can let your parrot stay somewhere else for a few days?

If not, I would move all stuff out of one room in your old appartment, and then put the parrots there. Then lock the door on moving day so people dont run in and out. Then at the new place, dedicate one room for the parrot, in which you put NOTHING. Move the parrot last, and move him into the new empty room. This way you will minimize the stress from people running about, moving stuff etc.

Thanks CML

Unfortunately I will not be able to leave her with someone else during the two days. But I will try to keep her as calm as possible throughout the process.

well actually you'll be surprised when you find out how tough your parrots can be. ive moved houses twice since i had my birds and not one of them were stressed out. you need your parrot to learn to be more comftortable in new environments for future moves. for example a couple times a week ill move there cages around to new rooms or outside or swap cages or put them in the aviary so moving around for them will be nothing new.
