Welll I did it

Postby Lina » Thu Jun 13, 2013 12:14 pm

I let Riki out of his cage for the first time, so he could have a lil freedom. While he was out he let me give him a full pet or two down his back and head rubs. I didn't get bit so i think it went well and he went back in his cage on his own :D :D

I do have a couple questions i saw where someasked what is too hot for them, my question is whats too cold? I live in the high desert in Central Oregon and it does cool off here at night , during the summer i wont be too worried about too cold but this winter i will.

I could also use some advice on changeing their diet from mostly seed too pellet. Biggest question how to get em to eat the pellets  :amazon:

Any idea are much needed :)

ok trying to post this before my computer locks up again :(

I think normal fluctuations in temp are normal. Better question to you is how cold will you be expecting? I assume bird will be in house with humans (as apposed to outside unheated shed) so if temps are ok with humans, I would assume they are ok with birds. I am not an expert here. Birds dont live in a constant temp in natural environments and can only guess that temp fluctuations in your home would be less severe.

As per eating pellets start reducing amount of seed with pellets gradually. He will get to eat more pellets till weaned off the seed. How much to feed should be determined using base weight of bird and weighing every day. I am not good with posting links but Micheal has posted these topics in his blog. More indepth and easier to understand than this short paragraph.

Hope this helps,

They are in their own shed but i do have heat out their so they dont get too cold and i am keeping an eye on the high temps so if i have to open windows too cool it, but it been getting cold here the last couple nights and with the heater i have for em i can barley keep it above 60 to 65 which im sure if fine for them im just worried about winter cause i have a feeeling they still gonna be here with me then and i want to prepare before hand :)

The bluefronts can take a slightly lower temperature than the yellownapes (they come from a lower region in South America) but if you keep the temperature at around 65, it should be OK (that's the temperature I keep in the birdroom during winter because I like them to be aware of the change in seasons not only by the difference in daylight hours but also in temperature and diet). They can survive colder temperatures but it depresses their immune system.
