how often to mist

Postby Lina » Sat Jun 15, 2013 12:50 pm

Im wondering how often to spray them with water or should i put a big old bowl of water in with them to bathe in?
The one bird Buzz loves to be spryed down the other Riki not so much so im wondering for Riki can a put a big bowl in there for him to bathe himself in, and how often i should be doing this. I live in the high desert in Central Oregon it very arid here.

Any input will be great for me

i like to mist my birds usually everyday but you dont soak them to the bone just enough to cool them off and it also promotes preening and will keep them quiet for a while

Well, if you live in the desert, you need to have a humidifier going on all the time in the room where they are kept. They need the humidity to keep a healthy respiratory system, skin and plumage.

All my birds have bowls of water to bathe in, different kinds, big and small, deep and shallow so they can choose the one they like best but, given that you have only two birds, observe them and see which kind they like best and use that. But, if one of them likes misting (I have some that LOVE it) do it, too.

You should aim for 70% -it's not really comfortable for humans but it's what's best for them.

If you go by what's good for them, unfortunately, in the long run you will have humidity problems in your house. Plus, what's comfortable for a bird may be harmful for a human, if you have respiratory problems, for example.

I would NOT recommend this high humidity. Keep it around 50% and mist your bird !

I don't think 70% humidity is really that bad for your house/health. I go to college in Virginia and it is often 70% humidity on warmer days and it's not really that bothersome. I am from New Hampshire and in summer, humidity ranges from 50-80% humidity, even when it is a cooler day.

I have to keep my house at least 40% humid for my harps so the wood doesn't crack. In looking up humidifiers for my harps, I've found you should get one that doesn't give off a visible mist - that WILL cause damage to your house and furniture. If you can't see the water vapors, it should be fine. Also, the humidifiers are really only effective in the room they're in. So if you put a humidifier in the same room as your birds, it won't really change the humidity of the rest of the house.

The birds are not in the same building as the rest. They are in their own space so it wont effect my step father who is on oxygen and stuff and i live a a trailer off to the side. I am trying to give them a healthy area to live in. But i do live in an arid climate right now not bad it been raining the last few days but the heat of summer(if we ever get summer this year) might be a tad dry for them, i have a humidifier somewhere in storage i think im still searching thru the stuff when i have time, hoping it wasn't somthing i left behind when i down sized to move in and take care of my parents. I wish my computer liked me more so i could do more research and stuff but im lucky to get thru a thread on this forum before it locks up and it takes me kie 3 times to get it to post a reply. Sorry if i sound needy but i kinda am on needing help and advice with these birds im trying my best and i know they need better than they have had to live with over the last year.

Hoping this posts or i might pop a cork
