Moving

Postby GreenWing » Fri Jun 28, 2013 5:05 am

How well do parrots adjust to a new home environment? I will be moving to a new place this Summer, and I was hoping it wouldn't stress my little greenwing.

I moved 6 times since I started keeping parrots and have never had a single problem with them adjusting to their new room. I move everything else and leave them for last so, by the time they get there, everything is already in place so, as long as the routine continues the same, they are fine.

Thank you for that helpful info, Pajarita. I was worried how my Sennie would handle our upcoming move and your info made me relax.

I had another question for you... I've asked it before and Michael told me to wait, but I may want to rehome a CAG in the future. How would a Grey get along with a Sennie? I know Sennies can be bullies. Tiki IS going through sexual maturity right now so I would definitely wait until she gets through that before I even consider adding another bird. She seems to be doing okay despite the hormones but she does have her nippy moments, which almost always happens when she is in her cage.

I've had two female sennies who did not mind at all living with other birds (granted, none of them were caged and the room was a very nice 25 x 13 with plenty of branches for perching) - they never actually socialized with the other birds but they did not show any aggression whatsoever toward them, either. I have a male sennie which bonded with a Nanday conure after his sennie wife passed and still lives in the birdroom today without having any problem with any other bird but my current female sennie would attack other birds -she actually flies off my shoulder to attack them if they get within 10 ft of me and, although I thought she had gotten over this habit, she did it again yesterday afternoon -we were in the living room, she was on my shoulder, and my daughter's MIL had taken my GCC out of his cage to cuddle with him (she has a female GCC bonded to a male Peachfront I gave her and she just adores the species) and Zoey flew off to attack him while he was on her chest so, apparently, it depends on the individual bird itself.... but I also think it has to do with cages because the birds I've had problems with all lived in cages while the ones that are never caged, are more tolerant.

Thank you, very good info

I've heard negative things about sennies and their jealousy, but info like this -- that they can bond to other birds -- makes me happy. I love parrots and if I had the room or an aviary I'd adopt a ton that are in need of a home
