I have a 15 year old Senegal, Milo whom I adopted 2 plus years ago with his male sidekick an Indian Ring neck, Pan. I paid $400.00 for the 2 birds and a nice large cage. About 4 months ago Pannie acquired a respiratory infection and died. Milo, heart broken, has warmed up to me to the point of sucking on my neck and letting me pet him until the other day when his hormones took a twist and he bit the youknowwhat out of my lip. About a 2 hour attack from him until I could get him back in the cage. Now, scared to death, I have someone coming to meet him today for a new home. I am very torn here as to what to do and about what Senegals are worth. I figure it is just a mating season thing but boy that beak is real sharp and I am not sure I can get over the fear of him now. Do you think it would be best to find someone with a female that would like to mate or keep him human bound?

When I had Daisy, my lovebird, I took her with me to visit relatives sometimes. The first visit went okay and I allowed her to be on everyone else's shoulder, finger, and be fed peanuts or pellets from their hands. But during that time, my aunt was poking her and Daisy didn't appreciate it so she lunged at her finger when it came close. My aunt thought it was hilarious and laughed about it, but obviously I didn't find it all that funny. While she kept aggravating Daisy, I was basically just in the background saying, "Uhm... can you not do that?... We've already worked pretty hard on our relationship and she might go back to being aggressive..." My aunt didn't look at me, but poked her a few more times until she stopped and said, "alright, alright." The rest of the day was fine, as was the second visit. However, on the third visit, things *seemed* to be going alright until we were about to leave. My aunt started poking her after seeing the reaction she'd get out of Daisy sometimes for fun. And of course, that's just what Daisy did. Pretty soon, my uncle was doing it to, and *then* - you won't believe this - she hit her!!! At this point, Daisy was full on trying to bite her while making whiny noises. I had to hold in all of my protective instinct to shout at them, but I quickly walked off and left while trying to make Daisy comfortable. That was the last time I ever took Daisy with me to visit relatives.

I did take Sunny, my current GCC a few weeks ago though, to a visit without my aunt, and everything went quite well! He mostly stuck with me, but was okay with being touched by everyone else. Looking back, I wish I took that chance to socialize him more because he's definitely become a one-person bird in the short few weeks he's been with us.

That is quite a problem, I must admitt, I have two senegals and I do find the male can be much more nippy than the female. If she died and left me with him I'd probably be in exactly the same position.

My idea would be to keep him for a year if he means that much to you, birds are notoriously hormonal things, so I shouldn't let just one bad experiance get you down.

I you've really decided that you want to sell him on and you don't want to try getting another bird (maybe female, but careful this idea may not work out). Try to make sure you know who your selling the bird to.

Many people don't completely realise that once sold you have NO control whatsoever over what happens to your parrot. Careful selling him to a breeder, mine were ex breeder's and didn't have the best of lives.

Good luck, :).

This is a very interesting thread!

The main problem I have is people suddenly sticking their hands out to touch Dusty, and then I have to smoothly and quickly swat their hands out of the way!

Yesterday my sisters boyfriend held out a cigarete to my parrot and said would you like to smoke? The cigarate did not get anywhere near the parrot but i have to say it did make me panicky, and i did not laugh.

He has only been to my house twice and and does not understand birds but i have been trying to explain to him and my sister why she behaves the way she does to them. I.E they are relative strangers, and shes nervous of them because they are not always calm and slow moving around her.
I let my sisters boyfriend feed her chillies from his hands and when she was lose out of the cage she rode around on his shoulder, at this point he followed my instructions because he was abit alarmed because she wanted to sit on him, and he did not understand that she would not be a problem if he walked around.
He's not a bad guy and he likes birds but doest not understand their logic but since both he and my sister are engaged now i thought he will need to learn abit more about my parrot to prevent future problems.

However i have to be diplamatic with them both because otherwise they dont listen to me, now and again it is abit alarming, when they do something inaproprate. But i guard the bird when they are staying with me.
