Getting aggressive about being on my shoulder

Postby Raque » Tue Jul 16, 2013 5:58 pm

Right now I am taking care of my friend's CAG :gray: named Missy while she is out of town...for a lot longer then originally planned. I have never owned a parrot before but been thinking of getting one of my own and have quite enjoyed taking care of Missy.

Anyway, in the last two days, Missy has been trying to charge up my arm to be on my shoulder anytime she can. If I block her she squawks loudly and angrily at me and mock bites me, by this I mean she does a quick bite to my hand but doesn't bite hard so there is no real pain....but in a manner that I get the message that she is not happy about this situation.

I really do not have a problem with Missy being on my shoulder, I just want it to be on my terms. She can have my shoulder when I put her there, not when she wants to be there. While I realize CAG are smart, I am not sure how well she will understand this concept. If she can't get this concept then I am fine with her never getting on my shoulder (she is a pet and I see no issue with giving her boundaries).

What I have been doing is to always stop her when she tries this, or if she did make it to my shoulder I immediately remove her. Then place her in or on her cage and deny her attention from me or even leave the room for a while.

This is not a big issue yet, I just want to stop it before it moves on to other things. Any advice would be appreciated.

Its a little late to answer this question but i heard they like to go on shoulders because it makes them feel more dominent than you.

I work with Senegals so I have no idea whether there are any ropes strong enough for a CAG's weight.

But when I have the Senegals out, I always keep a strong 21 inch rope at hand, if they start arguing or acting weird while on my shoulder, I put the rope up push it towards them for them to step up on to it, the rope I use can be bought fairly cheaply at near any pet store but I have no idea whether you would be able to find a rope big enough for the weight of a CAG...
