If it was nothing more than a tad on the long side, I would file it myself. Just a bit more, perhaps take to a bird store or parrot groomer. But if it is truly overgrown to the point that the parrot is having trouble, then I wouldn't risk anything short of a vet.

Despite extensive toys, filing perches, and things I give my parrot, her beak still outgrows its use so I file it about once a week with a file to keep the size. However, an overgrown beak can be skillfully cut and it can be maintained with filing. Don't cut it yourself and don't use a power grinder ever. Never do more than some mild filing with a nail file.

overgrown beaks can also be a symptom of scaly face, and other illnesses. i agree with michael, a vet is the best bet - they can show you how to do this properly yourself - none of my birds have had this problem so thankfully its not something ive had to do as yet.
parrots arent mere ornaments, and they're hardly "just a pet" they are intelligent and emotional creatures who want our companionship. As a bird owner, its a pleasure to make my parrots lives as happy, enriched and healthy as possible
