misinformation about parrot care i've learned

Postby pennyandrocky » Wed Aug 07, 2013 5:41 pm

some mistakes I made with my first parrot :amazon: were.
1. cover him up when he's loud. positive reinforcement works much better than punishment ignore the bad make a big fuss over good behavior.
2. my amazons diet was horrible the first few years. my grandmother always fed him a seed mix called parrot food. I did always prefer healthy food for myself and enjoyed sharing my dinner with my birds so I accidently fed my birds what they were actually supposed to eat but still filled his bowl with the seeds I thought he should have. I learned after I took him to the vet and was told he was overweight that I should be filling his bowl with pellets not seeds/nuts.
3. handfed babies are easier to tame. when my cousin told me she was buying a baby :irn: to hand feed I thought it was cruel to take a baby from his parents so young then while researching my :corella: s plucking/chewing habit I saw one of the causes was taking babies from parents to hand feed could be a cause for this and other health/behavior problems later on.
4. clipping keeps birds from flying away, I never clipped my birds but never had an opinion on what others did with their own birds. now I see as many lost clipped birds but more recovery stories from fully flighted birds.

If you think that it is misinformation that positive reinforcement works much better than punishment, what kind of punishment do you now give your parrot?

I think what she meant was that only the "cover him up" was misinformation - and the rest of the sentence was her own comments on the matter ;)

You can't punish parrots. They don't understand the concept so, when you do it, all you are doing is confusing the bird and breaking his trust in you.
