Leg bands

Postby Arwyn1313 » Fri Aug 09, 2013 4:29 pm

Hi everyone, I was wondering why some birds have leg bands and some don't. I have a 4.5 month old Meyers who does not have one.should I be concerned she didn't come with one? I'm so confused :?

They used to be required to prove birds were domestically raised and imported. But since this is no longer an issue, it is optional and up to the breeder. Some believe in IDing the birds anyway while others believe the bands are irritating and don't apply them.

It also has to do with the state laws, some of them require all birds over a certain size to be banded (like in New Jersey where I live where all birds conure-size or bigger need to be banded)

That is interesting. Do you why they do that?

Also the ring has to be fitted before the babies leg gets too big. Occasionally the breeder misses the time to fit it, especially if the baby is growing a bit faster than" normal" and is kept in the nest instead of being hatched with an incubator or taken for hand rearing upon hatching. What country are you in? We might be able to tell you if its a legal requirement where you are.

It's the law but I assume it's was done to ensure that all parrots are domestic-bred. They also require that all bands have the state initials and that all exotics (except for cockatiels and budgies) are registered with the Fish and Game Dept. Each state is different.

Are there bands with GPS chips in them like dogs can have?

No, microchipping is done in the same way as with a dog - there are mini microchips that are used for birds and are inserted under the skin. That's a good idea though, I wish there was something like that!
