Is my Senegal too young to be doing this?

Postby Aabraham07 » Sun Aug 25, 2013 12:23 pm

Hello everyone! My name is Ashley, and my Senegals name is Nala. A few weeks ago, Nala has started to regurgitate her food for me, and has started doing her skirt dance. This is all very sweet, but my concern is...she is only 6 months old! Is it normal for her be doing her mating dance this early? Everything I've read has said that they do not normally start doing this until they are at least a year old....I am also in contact with Nalas sisters parents, and they are saying their bird remi has begun this behavior as well. My question is, should I be concerned, or is it okay that she's growing so fast?
Thanks!!

Ashley :senegal: :monk: :sun:

Mine is 3 months and she gives me a gurg sometimes when we play. It's not entirely uncommon. Be sure it's not illness, and if it's clear it isn't enjoy your birdies love before she's too old to enjoy it guilt free.

It is the same problem with my budgies they are too small and they sometimes act like sometime the feed each other and sometime preen each other they are free from illness and too small male is 4 month and female is 3 month.

Gohan, your budgies aren't too small. 3-4 months is fairly mature for a budgie, and if they are feeding eachother htis is bonding behaviour. I wouldn't say it was a problem.

And no to the OP your bird isn't too young but its still not common in this young sennie. Perhaps to be on the safe side get your bird checked out but otherwise try to discourage reguargitation and inappropriate attachements to anything that isn't another sennie i.e don't let them regurge on you.

My Senegal has been regurgitating (the motions only) and the skirt dance since the day I got him at 5 months old, though of course I don't encourage him

No any bonded bird that sees you as its mate will try to court you then take things further. the only thing you can do is discourage it.

My youngling jardines have a gurg. It's normal. I don't really seea need to specifically discourage it yet, since the best way to discourage it is to withhold food and manage sleep, both things people may not want to do immediately with their babies. Besides that, its my personal opinion That while it is in their instincts to behave this way, i don't think they have the functioning endocrine systems to become hormonal. I don't know that for sure, but a universal truth of life is that babies don't have babies or even desire to reproduce although many desire to receive and give love.

No, all parrots that mate-bond with people (which is not recommended) would do this during breeding season. What's unusual is that they have breeding behaviors when they are at an age when they should start to mature sexually but all commercial hand-feeding formulas are made with soy (as are all pellets except TOPs) which has an estrogenic effect so they are maturing before they should.
