My corella. Biting his feathers

Postby Jaunita » Wed Sep 04, 2013 4:42 am

Dear forum,
please give me advise, my corella bites his tail feathers off half way, he has no more tail feathers showing, he has a complete room to himself (sunroom). Lots of toys, and ropes which he uses everyday to flap dangle off, i have lots of one on one with him of course what he allows he does tricks and speaks quite a few words, he seems vey happy his food is pellets and fresh veg and fruit, but unfortunately he did have a traumatic event which happened 3 months ago, I will explain: I'm vey sad,, I work 2dYs a week, usually my corella is Locked. in the cage for the day, Wednesday last week was no exception, but when I came home to greet my baby, he scuttled over to the other side of the cage, shivering, my husband has recently been laid off from work and my son does not work on Wednesday, now when I saw both wings had a bit of dried blood on them I was very anxious I asked what had happened to him, they told me that my son felt sorry for him and let him out of the cage, anyway apparently they had to get to college and needed to get him in the cage, so he would not come to them and then he started trying to fly upwards and became very anxious after 20 min trying to get him my son said he was very stressed breathing fast ect, he picked him up from behind and then noticed that both wings were bleeding he had lost 2 blood feathers, he has now included me in this traumatic experience won't come to me, he eats, drinks well, poo the same as always but I must not put my hand anywhere near him, I have left the cage close talk to him give him xtreats, so eventually he came to me by himself so I opened the cage again so that he could come out, no matter how hard I tried he would not step up so I did not want him to stress again, so I took a small blanket and put it over him to take him back to the cage, this morning when he saw me he flaps all over the cage, I have never hurt him, to see him so stressed when I come near breaks my heart, I loved our cuddles, i miss it, but now he sees me as the enemy, my husband and son can't come near him here ally gets stressed, he does not like me to leave the room but also does not want me near, please tell me what to, he my first parrot, I don't know what to do, I just want him to trust me again, I presume putting the blanket on him scared him off again, I now will keep him locked up until I hear what to do, he plays in his cage ect but when I come near the cage he freaks out.
This has now changed, his much better with me know I have just stayed close and left him to come in his own time he comes to me lets me scratch him but still won't step up, so if anyone has advise on both aspect I love to hear

Well, for one thing, it takes a lot of banging for them to bloody both their wings so something must have happened that you are not aware of with your husband and/or son. As to now, you will have to start from a minus point -meaning, you will need to work to get to a neutral zero and start re-building his trust in you from there (you lost it when he needed you and you were not there for him). See if you can target train the bird (see Michael's instruction on that) and start from there but, if nothing else, don't use a towel at all. Let the bird go back to his cage on its own (you can always tempt him by putting a couple of nuts or seeds in it).
