Bells and behavior

Postby JKFnotJFK » Wed Sep 04, 2013 7:25 pm

Bells. My new GCC loves and hates them. More than any cockatiel I owned, she is determined to destroy (and I fear eat) the inside dinger. When she fails, she screams like crazy. She doesn't get frustrated and loud about any other toy.

Are bells dangerous? Will she succeed at eating it?
Can her squawking in frustration at toys (just bells) be tmanaged with training? Or just par for the course?
Will removing and avoiding bells solve both problems?

Bells can most definitely be dangerous.i once checked out every toy with a bell on it in the bird section of one of our pet shops and couldn't find a single one I felt was safe enough for my birds. its not just the bell that's a danger but the type of metal its made from and the chain itself. Any bells/chains must be regularly inspected to make sure there's no dangerous splits in them.
You can get bells which are inside a plastic casing and also ones that are completely closed up which are safer alternatives although do remember no toy is 100% safe. No need to deprive your bird of having some fun with a bell though.

I don't allow bells at all in the birdroom except for a single stainless steel cow bell (BIG) that one of the zons likes to ring and which has a clapper way too big for anybody to swallow - it also has no chain.
