Questions about adopting a GCC

Postby SarahMia » Wed Sep 04, 2013 9:18 pm

I am getting a GCC, Tango, from a coworker who can no longer take care of it and couldn't be happier, but I am worried about it adjusting once I bring it home. Its coming from a house with many other birds and dogs and cats and I live in an apartment by myself. Tango also may go home with me to my parents every once in a while (only about a 45 minute drive) and I already have a cage set up there. I am getting the cage he is in now when I get him so he has something familiar, but was wondering if there is anything special or extra that I can do to help him adjust to his new surroundings. Also he used to be caged with another GCC that died a little while ago and hasn't really been handled and played with much lately and I was wondering how long I should wait (if at all) before handling and training him. He is a little skittish and not used to being handled anymore.

Keep the cage, diet and routine exactly as it used to be and slowly and very gradually tweak them until they are what you want them to be. Use Michael's target training instructions to get him to bond with you. But I am afraid that there is nothing you can do to replace the company of the other birds -he won't miss the dogs or cats though... But, on a good note, all the GCCs I have (four) love to be with people all the time so, as long as he is not all alone for hours and hours, he should do OK.
