Senegal squawking, especially during mornings.

Postby magnetobli » Wed Oct 02, 2013 9:48 am

Hi, I have a 2yr old Senegal who squawks every time I leave the room. The morning is especially bad. I have read online that people take the parrot out of the cage for a short period in the morning, whilst they change food etc... Then the parrot goes back in until later in the day after work. I do the same, and spend around 3hrs with him out of the cage and 2 hrs in the cage during evenings. In general he is very tame. However, he won't stop squawking when I leave him every morning. Is this normal for well trained Senegals? I am beginning to teach him to whistle to signify the desire to come out of the cage, however, I presume this will not work when he panics in the morning when I leave! Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Just leave and don't come back. Don't give it much thought and it should hopefully subside with time. Whatever you do, don't reply or come back.

Parrots are highly social animals which live their entire lives from birth to death surrounded by their large, extended family. A parrot by himself is a confused, anxious and, most likely, scared individual. Some parrots resign themselves to it and cope (they never really adjust, they can't) but there is a percentage that will not. My second Senegal was given up because she would not stop screaming when left alone but she was fine in the birdroom with all the other birds. This is one of the problems of keeping an undomesticated species as a human pet.

Thanks for the quick replies, really I just wanted a sanity check from people with more experience, so I appreciate the info. Am I right by not spending much time with my Senegal in the mornings? Or would it make much difference if wake earlier to give more time, irrespective of the specific Senegal? Cheers.
