Cockatiel continuously crowing or screeching sound

Postby snk_anindya » Sun Oct 06, 2013 4:30 am

Hi all,
I just bought a pair of cockatiels yesterday.
But there seems to be some problem already. For all that I know one is male and other female.
The male is doing quite fine. But the female seems to be continuously making some really odd sounds.
Some times it sounds like screeching and sometimes its almost like crowing. This behavior is directed towards the male.

The male does not seem to pay much attention to it and is trying to stay by himself.
I am not sure how i can explain exactly. Will try to upload a video in some time.

Can someone tell me whats going on here and why this behavior?

Regards,
Kishore

That is odd. I took care of two Cockatiels once. One was male and the other female, but I never noticed this behaviour. Though I did catch the male doing mating calls to the female.
I'm not an expert, but to me it almost looks like she's asking for food. I could be wrong though, it's just what it looks like to me.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
But, I am sure they are not hungry. There is lots of food in the cage all the time and they keep eating at regular intervals.

It looks more like one of them is begging for more attention. Mostly something related to mating. And the other one is ignoring it. You can notice that the tiel thats making the noise is has its crest always down in a sort of submissive way.

Anyways.. I am no expert. Please let me know what else might be the reason for this ??

That's a hungry baby asking for food. It doesn't matter that there is lots of food in the cage if the bird was not weaned correctly.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your reply.
What you say might be very much correct. How ignorant of me !!
The bird looked big and i assumed that it is already quite old.
Sorry to be asking very basic questions.. But what could be the age of these birds.
If one of them was not weaned properly, what can i do now? How can I help ??
I have however observed it eating the seeds and veggies along with its mate... Pls help..

Kishore

To be begging they would be under 12 weeks old.... maybe a little older...

It's impossible to ascertain the age from a video - some species change their eyes or plumage as they grow but, as far as I know, lutino tiels look the same when they are young, adult and old. Can you ask the place where you got it from? But, regardless of what they tell you (sales people are not the most honest people there is when it comes to the product they are selling...), I would handfeed the bird starting twice a day and take it from there.
