Baby eclectus

Postby thatukulelegirl » Fri Oct 11, 2013 8:53 pm

I'm thinking of getting a young male eclectus (4 months old and newly weaned) but there is a problem. I'm about to start shift work. Each shift goes for 12 hours and consists of 2 days (7am-7pm), 2 nights (7pm-7am). After that, I'll have 4 full days off. I am so excited to get a bird, but I'm very aware of how young he is. I've bought plenty of foraging toys for his amusement and entertainment whilst I'm gone, but I'm writing on here to get opinions from those who have more experience than I do.
Although I'm ecstatic at the thought of having the little guy as a companion, I'm unsure as to whether to continue with the purchase of him, despite the fact that I have everything ready (a massive cage, a box full of toys, and all the love in the world for him). I just want what's best for him.
Do you think he'll do well with being alone 13 hours a day for 4 days a week, or should I wait another few years (when my work routines change)?

Your lifestyle is not suited for a bird in my opinion. Your schedule is not constant: you sometimes live during the day, sometimes during the night. The parrot could adapt to one or the other, but not both. Which means he is going to be living one or the other. And that he'll be making noise, including screaming, when you're sleeping. I don't see how this could work for any of you.
