Hormonal Oscar

Postby Wayne361 » Sat Oct 26, 2013 5:01 pm

Hey is this the time of year birds get hormonal? I think I heard African species get hormonal when light starts to diminish (shorter days). Anyhow, he has been a bugger the last couple days. Gonna fly him hard tonight to get release some of the pent up energy....just hope he cooperates...not his usual self but it will pass.

The hunger is there. Maybe just a moody spell. See what tonight brings.

It's interesting cause my birds are better behaved and more responsive than usual. I attribute it to being fed the same as before but temps dropping so they get hungrier until I figure out their new needs. Portions have been going up and yet they are still very eager. I think spring is when they get lazy... when it gets warm and they feel overfed instead. With Senegals, I know hormonal activity has a lot to do with wet seasons so water or humidity can set them off.

Ok....thanks for the input. I know I wasnt in the best mood myself last night, so I am also chalking it up to him "sensing it" Namely uncalled for agression. He attacked my hat, which he has never before and had a spuratic outburst of biting when I was doing some fetch training. He hasnt shown any agression in about 2 years....thought I had faded that behaviour completely....but maybe something has set him off. Maybe a moult is coming? He seemed a bit agitated/uncooperative.....which simply isnt his nature. Will observe/train tonight and see what happens.....

Absolutely different bird last night. Back to normal. Performed flawlessly during training. Expanded on his retrieve training. Flight sessions great. Absolutely no sign of aggression as I was freely grabbing him/handling etc. I guess parrots can be like people and have an off day.

Cheers.....
