My Parrot Has Stopped Talking

Postby Raque » Fri Nov 22, 2013 11:58 am

For the last day and a half my parrot, an 11 year old African Grey, has not made any noise. Not normal chatter, not begging for treats, not calling for me when I leave the room, not even waking me up in the morning. Otherwise, she seems in good spirits and her weight, poop, how much she is eating all seems normal. She is still affectionate toward me, and wants scratches and to hang out near me. She just is not making any sounds.

This is my first bird, is this normal?

How long have you had her? Because if you have had her all her life, she has talked all along and has now stopped, she might be sick (not everything shows in the poop and weight).

I have only had her for a few months now. She normally chats a lot but has been silent, absolutely no noise, for the last 2 days.

I am worried she is sick but she is not showing any other symptoms yet. I called my vet but he is out until Monday, I made an appointment for then anyway and got the name & number of another vet they recommend if she starts looking more sick before then.

I've kept multiple parrots since 1992 and believe me when I tell you that by the time you actually notice anything, they are very sick so, please, play it safe and take her to an avian vet as soon as you can. Does she fly? Because, when they are sick, the first thing you notice is a lack of desire to fly,a weakness when they do and/or shortness of breath after a short flight. Another symptom is when they nap after breakfast.
