Escaped bird, PLEASE HELP !!

Postby daniel.lloydwilliams » Thu Dec 05, 2013 3:23 pm

Hi all, it's been a while since I have posted but have taken a lot of advice from here. But now I need your help more than ever. I'm sorry for the long post but want to give you as much info as possible

On Tuesday night, my 6 year old son for some insane reason walked out side with our 3 year old green Indian ringneck rio sat on his head. He wanted to show his mum who was cleaning the rabbit out.

He was spooked I think and took flight in to the night. My wife lost sight of his direction and upon my return we both went in to the night sreaming his name but with no luck.
I did try log on here but Google kept saying it could not find the page....

Next day I was up before dawn and out looking for my bird. Playing his fav parrot sounds and videos in the hope of a response or sound from him.... Nothing
I returned after a hour only to place his cage out side with freash food and off I went again till after dusk. All the advice I had read on the net said he will be more vocal at dawn and dusk.
While I was out my wife made posters and posted them round town and in pet shops..and he had his photo shared so many times on Facebook I lost count.
That night my wife and I cried for hours... We are at a loss with out him.

After taking yesterday off work as a sick day I needed to return to work.
While gone my wife put the hifi out side and played parrot sounds.
I went our looking for him at dawn before going to work at 9, I lasted 3 hours.. Called the boss and came home to look for my bird.
4 more hours of looking and playing sounds and calling his name and still no sign or sound.
Tonight is his 3rd night out there on his own in the cold and I have no way to help him.

When we got him we clipped his wings... But advice in here said it was bad for him so after 3 years they where about as full as they could of got.

Rio was and still is our world and it's killing us not knowing if he is ok.
He is not ringed as when we got him he had none and was told it could drive him nuts.
We have paid the RSPB to register on there and if he turns up at any vet or centre we will be informed...
Now I'm off tomorrow and my wife and I are off out again on the hunt. We love in a rural town with lots of fields and trees
Can any one give us any advice or help please. We are dieing with out him.
Any help or advice would be great... We would even be happy knowing he is alive and well out side and happy..
If it's better for him out there and he will survive we can rest easy knowing he will be happy

You've made a good start. Don't give up!

Looking for helpful info, I copied this from another thread:

-contact john hayward from parrots magazine, he has an international lost and found register.
http://www.parrotmag.com/component/even ... /?choose=2
-Contact 911 parrot alert http://www.911parrotalert.com/ Im pretty sure these guys are international too
- put up posters everywhere you can, give them to family and friends so they can put them up as they are travelling around.
-contact all rescues, sancturies, police stations, vets, pet shops and other shops in the area and ask them to tell everyone they can
-offer a reward, you dont have to say how much if you can only afford a small amount.
-remember birds can fly miles
-ask everyone you see in the street (as long as it doesn't compromise your safety), word of mouth will go a long way to helping
- ask newsagents if they are willing to put a leaflet in with their newspaper deliveries
-get the story on the radio or in the newspapers if you can, bear in mind they get alot of missing pet stories every day so this might be hard to do, think if there is something unique about the situation you can use to increase the chance of being published.
-put adverts in the newspapers/websites that have a section for advertisement.

I'm sure others on this forum will have more to say when they see your post.

Depending where you live, I'd contact the parrot society or similar parrot organisation and tell them that your parrot's lost, contact parrot rescues or rspcas to tell them that your parrot's missing, leave your contact details so they can contact you if they find it.

Put up posters with a picture of your bird doing something destructive (people are less likely to want to keep a destructive bird) and reward (incentive for someone to give the bird back), contact details and the name of the parrot or details on how someone could get the bird to come to them.

Was your bird microchipped? If so, inform the vets/ rescues, rspcas, e.t.c. You can also inform airports if possible as some people can try to take the bird out of the country (unlikely though).

Sorry to hear your bird's lost though, wouldn't wish that on near anyone, hope you get your bird back soon!

If your country's fairly warm, your parrot will probably be fine, (quaker parrots have started to become native to britain so I'm sure your ring neck should be able to put up with a bit of cold weather) but unless ringnecks are native to where you live, it'll probably be a bit lonely.

Sorry to hear your bird's lost though, wouldn't wish that on near anyone, hope you get your bird back soon!
