Is it wrong to recage my escaped bird?????

Postby daniel.lloydwilliams » Thu Dec 12, 2013 3:22 pm

Hi all,
Well we have found our missing bird

viewtopic.php?f=18&t=11635

He was 2 miles away eating from a ladies bird feeder and having a bath. :irn:
So we did try and catch him with no luck, when he seen my wife he went nuts... Chatting and shouting out to her which was really nice..... we have put his cage out side in this ladies garden where rio has turned up for 3 days running. Fingers crossed he jumps in
So he has been out for just over 9 days and looks a little thin but he has picked a beautiful place to hang out. A bird feeder in every garden. Fruit trees everywhere, no main roads. Miles of open fields and load and loads of big old tree's

Looking at him fly and knowing he is living well in such a beautiful area, my wife and I are wondering, our we doing the right thing trying to catch him .. It's the most amazing place up there for birds and taking him from miles and miles of open space to the dinning room seems wrong. :(

We love our bird to death and it breaks our heart that he is not here. But we want him to have the best life possible and if that's wild and free then so be it....

What do we do guys..... If he's better off at home I won't stop till he is back with us,

He's likely to die out there. I would get him home.

I agree. A captive-bred bird (raised without bird parents) doesn't know the first thing about survival (baby parrots learn from their parents and that's why they stay with them way after they can feed themselves) and the fact that he is still alive doesn't really mean anything. Please do your best to catch him and, if you feel bad about him not having freedom, give him his own room where he can live cage-free and get him a girlfriend.

I was on my phone last time I replied to this thread, hence the short reply.

Did you get your bird back? Please say you did :).

As I wrote, your bird is very likely to die in the wild, it's simply not equipped to survive there and lacks the necessary skills to do so, even with bird feeders close by.

The parrot can, and most likely will:
*Starve
*Freeze to death
*Be eaten by predatory animals
*Catch diseases from wild birds and thus die
*Any number of different hazards that a parrot used to living indoors isnt capable of handling.

I realise that you want to feel that its nothing wrong with him in the wild, but trust me, it IS.
We love our bird to death and it breaks our heart that he is not here. But we want him to have the best life possible and if that's wild and free then so be it....

If you love him, then please get him home. Many owners of lost parrots would beg for a chance like yours.

When you do get him home, please please please read up on parrot safety and secure your house. You cant blame your four year old son, walking out like he did with the parrot on his head shouldnt be possible in a house with a parrot. Install a bolt lock high up on the door which he cannot reach and lock it when the parrot is out of its cage.
Also, I would urge you to read up more about parrot care, I mean no disrespect with this but you come off as you arent sure whats best here, and it should be very obvious. A good place to start is Michael's blog or book, they are filled with good info.

You can also start topics here and ask away :), and I and the others will do our best to help you. The search function is great as well!

Actually, they die of dehydration before they starve to death or get eaten by a predator and that's why is so important to catch them as soon as possible (because a bird can go many days without food but only a few without water).
