MY LITTLE MAN IS HOME !!! but advice needed

Postby daniel.lloydwilliams » Sat Dec 14, 2013 2:44 pm

Well we got our little man back yesterday !!!! YAY :D :irn:

after 10 days in the wild he had flown to a place about 2 miles from here. We set up his cage in the back garden of a lady who had spotted Rio in her garden 2 days before and he kept popping back.

So what advice can you guys give me to make sure he is in tip top shape, He seems to have a small cut above his back talon that seems to be causing some discomfit. He is walking very slowly and keeps standing on one leg for a minute before swapping... this carries on for about an hour.
He is chirping like old but not talking... He does make a sound like he wants to talk but it sounds a bit dry.
He also looks tired and ruffles up his feathers at about 6pm like he ready for bed....
His tail feathers looked snapped in one or 2 places as well..

I went to see the local vet as soon as I knew he was on his way home to make a appointment but he seems like he really did not care. when asked if I should leave it till after the weekend so he is not to stressed, His reply " Well the worst that can happen is he has a heart attack and drops down dead"
not really what I wanted to hear... I want my vet to want to look after my bird, not if he turns up dead o well !!!

Also need to find a way to get him in a pet carry... he hates them and when we take one near he flys off

cheers all

You could try sitting the open carry near his cage door and putting his food and water inside the carry. I would also keep water in his normal cage but not the food. It may take a while but he will go to the food.

Sounds great that you got him home daniel, my heartfealt congratulations! I am so happy for you :).

Please start by making sure he is comfy, and offer lots of good food so he can recover. When he has, you really should start some training, by which you can also make him go willingly into a carrier. Target training is really great here, but you also need to make sure that the carrier is percieved as a good and fun place to be.

Start by readining Michael's basic taming guide, continue with target training and take it from there:
http://www.trainedparrot.com/taming

You also REALLY need to parrot proof your doors, install new locks so that your kid CANNOT, and I mean CANNOT, accidently let your parrot out again. No amount of training or care can help him in the wild.

I am sorry to hear about your vet, sounds to me that you should find a new one. Is your current vet an avian vet? Doesnt sound like it.
Give this a try:
http://www.aav.org/search/
You can search for avian vets worldwide with this search tool.

EDIT:
Crap, seems they now require a login to do a vet search, it might still be worthwile to register though if you're in the need of a vet! I have mailed them and asked why the hell they would do something so stupid as to limit access to a vetrinarian finder when they want to promote avian medicine, but in kinder wording of course.
