Should I get second bird... PLEASE HELP

Postby 084bar » Thu Dec 19, 2013 10:29 am

Hi Bird Lovers

I have a Indian Ringneck named Peanut (was just a joke in the family but stuck). I might be getting a second bird, maybe Cocktail or lovebird or another ringneck not sure yet but my question is Peanut has been talking from when he was six months old and he one year and two months old now, if I get a second bird will he stop talking or will he try and kill the other bird when I have them out together (play time, which is all the time).... I been battling with this question all the time and now I have finely asking for help the answer

Thanks all :irn:

Funny, my GCC was named Peanut. It's a bit of an uncommon name, isn't it?

As for jealousy, as far as I know (regarding IRNs, not too much...) I don't think IRNs are too jealous prone. However, it depends on the bird itself. Does your bird like you and no one else? Does it get along with others (humans)? When my Peanut met our other birds, she was curious about them but never really sought them out- she was far more interested in me.

If you do get a new bird, please quarantine it first. When we got our budgie PJ, we didn't and now I think it might be a factor that played in Peanut's death. Also, NEVER house two birds in one cage, unless they were brought up together/mates (even then, be very, very, very careful). A bird can easily kill another, despite the species. You would need an aviary to house two strange birds together, and even then it might not work. So it's much easier to get another cage.

When you feel very comfortable that one bird is not being aggressive to the other (over the span of a few months) then you might let them interact with each other. If you get a small bird, like a budige, then I wouldn't recommend letting them meet at all- IRNS have those really big beaks that could hurt a budgie easily.

And that's all I have to say for now, off the top of my head. Good luck with your Peanut! :irn:

My Peanut, dose not like me kissing or hugging my husband in front of him, it all about him or nothing, I been talking to some friend with bird (not many) they all think I should rather not get a second bird because Peanut travels with me to work every day and if I don't take him he gets so mad.....

He has two cages, one to travel with and a big one at home, when I do leave him at home he in his cage with the radio on (he love music)

Thanks for your Help, It leaves me lots to think about because I thought it would be a friend for Peanut

I do see you are saying the birds are not taking the treats, have you tried different treats? What do they like the best, use that as treats.
