Gripping top of cage and flapping wings

Postby GreenWing » Sun Jan 19, 2014 4:52 pm

My Senegal used to do this and she'd screech in the process... it was like she was having a tantrum, of sorts.

However, Chance, my CAG, does this as well, minus screeching. She'll grip the top of her cage and flap her wings repeatedly.

My question is, why do parrots do this? Is it an exercise? A tantrum? Chance does have tantrums where she basically cusses me out, but not during this gripped wing-flapping thing.

I think just babies and clipped parrots do this. Mine stopped since being babies and I heard from others that as their parrots became well flighted, they have stopped doing this. It's the birdy's flight simulator.

Thanks, Michael. This makes sense. Chance is between 5 to 8 years of age, but when she came to me, she was clipped and BADLY so, it is really sad, not to mention the Avian vet said she has some broken feathers, poor thing. :(

I list her as YES to the flight because I will NEVER clip her and WILL flight her... she is molting now but it may be a while before she has full feathers.
