Help, new member

Postby 4hallie » Wed Feb 05, 2014 9:14 pm

I have a baby greenwing (keleesi) that is now 8 months old. This baby has loved me sooooo much I couldn't get her off of me, we were so close. Tonight, I went to get her for our nightly love, and for the first time since she was 4 weeks old, that she refused to come to me. It took me about 10 minutes to coax her to step up. Then, when I put her on the bed next to me, she kept rolling on her back grabbing my hands (ouch) with her talons and play biting, not biting, just playing. I mean, I couldn't even pet her because she kept insisting rolling on her back and playing. It sounds cute, but it just isn't like her. I'm driving myself nuts trying to figure out what brought this totally different behavior on. Why didn't want to come to me? Did I do something today that she is paying me back for? I'm going crazy trying to think of every step I did with her today.

Please help. Thank you :macaw:

I am just guessing that you are trying to see if anyone is paying attention as you give so little info that all anyone can do is guess.
Diet affects behavior, any changes here?
Light affects behavior, what type of light schedule is this bird on?
Birds mask how they feel in order to protect themselves, when was the last vet visit?

And we could keep guessing. My suggestion is first to take this one in to see the doctor and try to rule disease out. Also any info about the bird as well as her environment, also pics would be helpful.

It's her age. Macaw parents supplement their babies feedings until they are around 8 to 9 months old so this is the age when the baby starts 'birdie kindergarten' and doesn't 'need' momma so much. But, in any case, no diurnal bird is receptive to interaction at night, they like to do it after breakfast and before dinner and a,lthough some of them are more docile than others and resign themselves to the bad schedule, there is always a percentage that really does not like it. Birds sleep at night, they don't play.

One more thing, if the bird doesn't want to go to you, don't insist. If you do this all the time, the bird ends up biting because they only have so many ways to 'tell' you what they like and don't like so I suggest you 'listen' to what your bird is telling you and comply with its wishes . because you do NOT want a BIG greenwing getting used to biting just to get its point across.

Welcome 4hallie! :)

I don't have a Macaw, but my parrot went through similar things, like Pajarita said. Just something babies go through. We all go through the "I don't want to step up!" days. It rained today and on grey days...Emmi won't come over to me for awhile after I get home. It sucks when I need a bird cuddle, but I have days where I don't want her flying on my head. It's not always what you do, so don't take it personally. Pajarita's advice is sound though and ouch, good luck with that beak! I would be so scared to cuddle with that big beak! You are braver then I. Lol

I don't think 4hallie was trying to keep us guessing or get attention. It's her first post here and I'm sure she was just asking for help. It's not always easy to remember or know what info to include in a post if you don't know the normal protocol. Let's be welcoming and supportive so she will want to stick around and learn about her birds and share some knowledge she might have that can benefit us.

Actually I thought that I was being quite nice, as well as trying to be supportive. I was also trying to get her to look at her own post and try to answer any question about her bird given only the info contained in the post. So I was also trying to help her understand what to include in post to receive best possible answer as quickly as possible. Most people do not think of this as they possess all the info about their bird and its situation that we do not.

So I really was trying to be helpful supportive and nice. You don't see it that way!? Maybe you are right, Since I did not intend to be offensive , I apologize for my shortfall.

In my personal opinion, you both were right. The OP was not really giving enough information but, unfortunately, in way too many cases, the bird owner is not even aware of all the different things that affect their behavior so they don't give you the info outright.

Not a problem! Sometimes we all need to be made aware of how we are coming across, I know that it is too easy for me to be too blunt and unintentionally become rude and/ or condescending towards others. You are welcome to call me on poor behavior if you think it is occurring.
