I can see my sennie's microchip, is this right?

Postby JaydeParrot » Sun Feb 16, 2014 6:59 am

My Sennie has a tiny scar over where his microchip was put, but it's only just now that I've felt the area (his stomach) and reaslised that I can actually feel and see a small lump (what I believe to be the microchip, under the part of skin where the tiny scar is.

Should I be able to see/feel the microchip? I thought it was but under the breast muscle?

I don't think that's right. Sounds like they may have used one of the old style big ones. The newer ones are smaller and you shouldn't be able to see or feel them.

In all honesty I would seek the advice of your new vet. I really don't like the sound of the one who did the chips from what you've said in previous posts.

The lump you can see or feel may well just be swelling and scar tissue forming around the site as it heals up as the wound is new, however it might be the start of an infection or a chip that has been done incorrectly. You might be able to feel a chip but I wouldn't think it would be close enough to the skin to actually see it even when done on a smaller bird using a larger chip.
I don't want to scare you but I have heard stories about the chips slowly working their way back through the skin when not done properly, birds being in pain from incorrectly done chips and plucking and/or chewing them out- I don't know how true those stories are though but I know I would want to make sure.

There has also been reports of tumors growing where the chip is (the reason why I don't microchip my birds).
