Help! Severe Macaw Attacking Family Members

Postby laurenfitzy » Sat Mar 22, 2014 7:11 pm

:macaw3: My Severe Macaw Joshua keeps on trying to attack my mother every chance he gets. When he is with me Josh acts very kind and sweet, cuddling and generally behaving himself, but right when he sees my mom he puffs up and flies to attack her or if she is near he lunges and snaps his beak in her direction. In the past this has never happened before, my mom has never hurt him in anyway, she used to feed and takes care of Josh when I was busy now she she can't for he is constantly attempting to hurt her. After each Attack i place him back in the cage trying to teach him that if he continues with this behavior he wont get any playtime. It hasn't worked so far.

Like any mother and daughter we sometimes get into fights, Would this have any influence on his attacking?

Please answer if you know anyway of stopping this poor behavior any information is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Additional information:
Joshua is about 15-16 years old
We are his second home (adopted him when he was 6)
squawks a lot (annoying mostly my mom)
In the beginning he was my mothers bird for about 7 years then he attached himself to my sister then finally to me last summer before my sister left for university.

You are now his chosen one and he sees your mother as competition for his love. There is actually very little you can do about this because this behavior is completely normal for them as they always 'protect' their beloved in the wild. She can start target training him while he is inside the cage and you are not around but, I recommend that, when he is out with you, she kind of stays away until he feels more comfortable with her. By the way, putting him in the cage and taking your presence away from him when he is doing what he considers his job is confusing him and making things worse because he will blame her for it.
