Yellow Crowned Amazon behaviour issues

Postby Jasonhughes » Sun Mar 30, 2014 4:30 pm

I've recently bought a yellow crowned amazon that it 3, I've had him 3 days and I'm not expecting him to be settled as yet but my mrs can put her hand in without him biting etc and he'll let he scratch him but as soon as she's gone and I'm there he'll go for me at all costs apart when I'm feeding him apples or nuts,

Is this normal and what's the best way to go about this?

His previous owner was a woman and maybe that's why he's like he is with my mrs??

Any help and advice will be much appreciated

Hm, maybe it is that your bird prefers women...

Anywho, just be careful with amazons, they have a big attitude, and can be moody. Get as close as you can when your at the cage, once he starts freaking out, stop, and just stand there until he calms down, then slowly through the bars hold the almond by the tip and let him grab and eat it, BE READY TO MOVE FAST, I was bitten on the nose in a split second by my :amazon: .they should name them Sonic-Amazons.
Any who, once he gets the treat move your hand away, if you can sit by the cage and to do this for 3-4 days *don't just give him almonds, do this 1-3 times a day, don't want a little fatty now.* , be sure to let him out of the cage from time to time so he can roam, the reason of the process is to tame him, it shows that you mean no harm, and you only want to give him treats/make him happy, after a month or so, i'm sure you avian may be tamed, depends on your actions and the birds thoughts.

He's fine with me feeding him in his cage and takes little bits of nuts apple and quavers  Out of my hand. I tend to leave the cage open and just sit there talking jibberish to him just so he can get used to me.

Is it a good idea to leave him out of the cage even when he's like he is with me?

Thanks

Why are you wasting time speaking jibberish to your bird? It is a very intelligent creature and will never learn to speak contextually with you teaching nonsense. Some people are really big on setting regular training times but, the truth of the matter is that every interaction you have with your bird is training time for both of you. Make the most of it and teach you bird meaningful speech.

For my amazon, i usually just talk to him *have a mini conversation with him* or even read a book for him, whenever your home, i recommend you leave the cage open unless there is any cooking going on or hes in time out c:

Just my opinion: Due to the fact that a birds cage is to it, it's only place of security, I would never use it as a place of punishment regardless of how light the punishment is. It should be regarded as the birds safe zone, a happy place, a place the bird goes to by itself when it doesn't want to be bothered not when I don't want to be bothered.

As in jibberish I meant a small conversation. And I've started with his cage open now so he doesn't feel loco in and that I mean no harm so just see how he is over a couple of days :)

Just make sure he is kept at a solar schedule because Yellow Napes are at the top of the Hot Three (amazons species that are known for aggression) and males are worse than females so you do NOT want a sexually frustrated bird fixating on your wife as a mate (he will attack you every chance he gets and it will not be misbehaving, either, it will be him doing his 'job').

Had the cage open for the last 2 days whilst I'm there (about 5/6 hours) and he won't come out of his cage at all, mrs came over tonight and opened his cage and he was straight out and on top of it.

When I go near him he quakes and his pupils go small and then large ( which normally means he's about to go for you or something) tried holding my arm out for him to go to but just goes to attack me? Held a bit of apple out for him to have to show him I mean no harm and he snatched it off me and takes a chunk out of it in aggression??
