Conure noises & behaviour, what does it mean?

Postby ekongshavn » Mon Mar 31, 2014 6:05 pm

We have a 8 months old pearly conure and she is so cute and sweet. We're trying to figure out what the noises she makes means.

First one we're really curious about is when she flaps her wings a tiny bit very close to her body and she makes a sorta whining/cry noise. She seems rather pissed off or sad when she makes that sound because when I pet her she nimbles on my fingers when she makes that sound.
But she also makes that noise sometimes when we pet her or when she sits/lays down on the neck of my boyfriend.

Also...the annoying "eagle" scream.  We get startled everytime she does it!
Don't know for sure what that means, but she usually stops when we feed her apples bites.

Any conure owners who knows what this means? :D

This is tied into your previous post and confirms to me that you need to get your bird to the vet ASAP. Something is definitely wrong with your bird and she needs help, now!

The first actions and sounds are her asking for food and the scream is her demanding either food or relief from pain. I am suspecting that the problem is to be found in her crop and there is no time to waste!

Please keep us updated on her condition as I, for one, am very worried about her.

Well, the first description appears to be what I call the 'pretty please with sugar on top' (squatting down and fluttering her wings) but they don't usually make a sound UNLESS they are babies and hungry so Wolf could be quite right that there is something there not entirely as it should be. I don't know what you mean by the 'eagle scream' but conures do have a high pitch scream flock or distress call...

Normally I would have thought that she was asking pretty please give me attention of more food see how sweet I am. but the general tone of the two posts, only accepting food that is mostly water and breaks down to a mostly fiber free consistency that will run straight through and this unusual scream, just made shivers run up my spine. I can't place my finger on exactly what it is that is making me so concerned but, somehow it just doesn't come together quite right. I am really worried about this bird.

She's 8 months old, and the owner of the pet store said she still was a baby. (Not sure if that is right?) We will take her to the vet, we're kinda worried. She seems so annoyed when she makes that sound while fluttering her wings. She still wants to snuggle though, so it's really confusing.

"The eagle scream" is the high pitch scream.
Today, she all of sudden started to scream. But then all of sudden she made a happy scream following by a few "pri-pri's".

The eagle scream, is it like Ahh Ahh Ahh or one Ahhhhhh! I also have a Green Cheek and she makes bothsounds. The Ahh Ahh Ahh is when she's scared of something like thunder. The Ahhhhhhhh! Is just a contact call.

The wing flapping crying sound, Emmi did something sort of like that when she was your bird's age or maybe a bit younger. I had her on food with soy so we think she went hormonal because of that, but it didn't last long after I changed the food. She made grunt/cry noises. Not the duck quack they do when they have found something curiously new, but almost like a vibration noise that was a little squeeky. She also does something similar now if she gets caught in something, like under a blanket or in my hair, but then she throws a fit immediately after. It sounds like an annoyed grunt with a squeek at the end.

She also begged for food we were eating with little wing flips and chirps if we were not paying attention, but that has stopped after ten months I think? Now she just charges us. Lol

But see what the vet says. Then check to see if she is getting enough sleep and is not hormonal. Stop all pellets that have soy. Doing that on your boyfriend's neck kinda leads me to believe it might be hormones, but I would get her to a vet asap.

Haha that's cute! We took her to the vet and she that our bird was healthy and nothing was wrong! :D She also said that our bird might be a little diva since our birdy was so far used to get what she wanted from us. And those crying noises was probably "feed meeee!" or "cuddle with me!". :D
