I can hear my bird breathing

Postby Dreaming » Tue Apr 01, 2014 2:20 am

Whenever my amazon parrot goes asleep, I can hear her breath. Is this normal? It's been happening for about 2 months now.

Hi Dreaming! We need more information here. Could you here her breathe BEFORE two months ago? What kind of amazon? How old is she? Has her weight changed?

If you think she is sick, get her to an avian vet. Birds hide illness until almost the last minute, but you know your bird better than anyone.

If you can hear her breathing, there is something happening in there. It could be many different things: something stuck in one of her nares, a respiratory infection, liver or heart enlargement, liver disease (they retain liquid in the abdomen and it pushes against the air sacs), aspergilloma, aspergillosis, etc. Please take her to an avian vet for a complete physical.

Hey, sorry for the late reply!
She is a yellow naped Amazon parrot. I do not know if she's been like this before 2 months ago sadly. (I bought her 2 months ago)

She seems perfectly fine during the day; active and talks a lot. I've noticed that her droppings don't look abnormal and I've also noticed that whenever she breathes in and out, I hear it. Should I still bring her to a vet?

As always, thanks for the responses!

Yes, you should. You are not supposed to hear a parrot breathing. Not ever.

Take her to a vet, immediately. She could have air sac mites.
