Dusky Pionus: 11 years old, Leg Band Problem

Postby Glitter44 » Tue Apr 01, 2014 1:42 pm

My bird favors his/her left leg. I took a close look at the band on the right leg and see that it is making my birds skin puffy. I want to have it removed or remove it.
Miss this something I can do? I called my vet, they seemed as clueless as I am. Obviously they don't treat birds...my Pionus is healthy otherwise.
Anyone know how to remove? :meyers:

If the leg is swollen, you need to take her to an avian vet because you can't cut it off yourself. There are tools to do this but there needs to be enough room between the band and the leg so, if the leg is swollen, they will need to cut it off with a little electric saw and only an avian vet is able to do it (regular vets don't usually have the tool).

Please do not wait, the feet don't have a whole lot of blood irrigation to begin with and any blockage of circulation can cause toes or even the entire foot to wither and fall off.
